"TMT organization and opportunity exploitation: An organizational configuration approach"
Abstract
In this paper, we jointly consider the organization of the Top Management Team (hereafter: TMT) and firm strategic opportunity exploitation. Specifically, adopting a configurational approach, we study whether different ways to combine selected elements of the TMT’s organizational design are associated to the number of strategic opportunities exploited by the firm. Applying a cluster analysis to a sample of 238 Italian firms, collected through a large-scale survey addressed to CEOs, we found that three well-characterized clusters exist, which we label as incentive based TMT, empowered TMT, and CEO centric TMT. Each cluster represents a specific TMT organizational configuration, defined by diverse stances of nine organizational design elements. In turn, these TMT organizational configurations are associated with different levels of opportunity exploitation. In particular, incentive based TMTs and empowered TMTs perform better in exploiting strategic opportunities, while CEO centric TMTs are associated to a lower number of opportunities exploited.
