"Regional Alignment and Performance"
Abstract
Recent studies observe the increasing within country divergence in regional performance. This paper develops the concept of regional alignment to suggest that synergistic relations between scientific expertise, technological specialization and industry composition of regions affect local firms’ productivity. Using a spatial econometrics framework, we test the convergence process across 93 French departments (NUTS3) over the period 2000-2011. We derive our empirical specifications from the semi-endogenous dynamics of productivity as proposed by Jones (1995) and extend the model to integrate spatial dependence of productivity growth. Our results suggest a convergence process in the dynamics of regional productivity. Interestingly we find a direct as well as an indirect effect of regional alignment on the rate of regional productivity growth. If the direct effect is unambiguously positive, the indirect effects of regional alignment are mixed. These results suggest that regional alignment tends to strengthen the influence of R&D on productivity on the one hand, but, on the other hand, reinforces the convergence process between regions.
