"In(conspicuous): Immigration and visibility enhancing strategic choices of informal economy entrepreneurs "

Abstract
While organizational visibility is fundamental to garner critical resources and stakeholder support, informal economy entrepreneurs who increase the visibility of their enterprise run the risk of exposing themselves to significant social costs or expropriation. Drawing on institutional embeddedness, we contend that domestic informal economy entrepreneurs will calibrate visibility enhancing strategic decisions differently than immigrant informal economy entrepreneurs. We explore this contention using a configurational QCA analysis on a unique census dataset of informal economy entrepreneurs in the township of Delft South in Cape Town, South Africa. Our results indicate that immigrant informal entrepreneurs play a particularly high stakes game: compared to domestic informal entrepreneurs, they are more likely to pursue visibility enhancing strategies and their performance is more directly tied to these strategic choices. Our study contributes novel insights to the unique role of immigration and institutional embeddedness in the informal economy.
