We know since the work of Cartan that complexe semi-simple Lie algebras are classified by some finite graphs (their Dynkin diagrams); the theory of Kac-Moody algebras associate to almost any graph a (usually infinite dimensional) lie algebra.
We will explain how to associate an (infinite dimensional) Lie algebra to a smooth projective curve and how its structure is related to some geometric counting problems: indecomposable vector bundles, cohomology on moduli spaces of connections on the curve, Higgs bundle, etc…
If time permits we will mention the link with the algebras introduced recently by Maulik and Okounkov.
