Solar flares are the most energetic phenomena in our solar system, releasing magnetic energy of up to 1025 J in seconds to minutes and efficiently accelerating electrons and protons, as well as heating the ambient plasma, in the process. I will review our current understanding of where and how energy is released and particles are accelerated, with a focus on X-ray and ultra-violet observations of solar flares with space-born instruments, as well as radio observations from the ground.
