Abstract: In this talk, we explore the interplay between mixing and dispersion in the linear and nonlinear stability of shear flows in the Navier-Stokes equations, with a focus on the simple case of three-dimensional Couette flow. We present two distinct yet related scenarios - rotating fluids and stably stratified fluids - where both phenomena arise. We highlight key similarities between these settings, particularly how oscillations suppress the lift-up effect instability and how dispersion increases the nonlinear stability threshold.
