The Terahertz frequency range (0.1-10 THz) hosts numerous collective modes like phonons, magnons, electromagnons and attempts to excite them selectively by THz radiation have been undertaken in the past. Recent advance in Terahertz source developments towards higher intensity opens now new perspectives towards controlling optical, magnetic and electronic properties of matter also in non-resonant conditions.
In this talk I will introduce the currently most powerful Terahertz laser source developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute [1] and will discuss experimental evidence for THz-induced strong-field effects observed in a ferromagnetic thin film and semiconductors unraveling magneto-optical and electro-optical phenomena on a sub-cycle timescale [2-4].
