The MS Society supports research in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) to improve the understanding of the causes and development of the disease, to further develop treatment options, and to improve quality of life for people with MS and their families.
 
For the 60-year-anniversary the MS Society allocated CHF 1.5 Mio to support research projects on one of the following topics:

  • Understanding MS: Causes of MS, Genetics in MS, Environmental Factors, Disease Progression.
  • Living with MS: Symptom Management, Quality of Life, Complementary Treatment Options.
 
The MS Society requires grantees to make the results of its funded projects available in an open access (OA) publication or database.
 
Who can apply:
  • The PI must be part of a research group. Non independent researchers must join a letter of support from the Head of their lab, confirming support to the project and availability of the necessary infrastructure/consumables. Up to 3 applicants for each application.
 
Funding & Duration: up to CHF 200’000 for 24 months
  • Eligible costs: Personnel (excluding the PI), Consumables, Travel (only if necessary for the project e.g. to learn a technique – no travel costs to meetings), Publication costs (only if open access, according to SNSF guidelines).
  • Ineligible costs: Meeting costs, Overheads, Equipment and Infrastructure, General Travel.
 
Deadline: 1 September 2019
Decision: by end of December 2019
Start of the Grant: 1 January 2020 (estimate)
 
Application & Evaluation:
  1. For the short statement confirming that EPFL does not engage in competing fundraising activities (compulsory), contact [email protected] at least 7 days prior to submission.
  2. Fill out the Scientific and Financial Forms following the call Guidelines (follow this link and scroll down the page for the call documents).
  3. Prepare a Lay Summary of your project (up to 400 words) in French, German and Italian.
  4. Annexes:
    • 1-2 minute video in French, German or Italian (please contact Mediacom for assistance).
    • Support Letter from the Head of the Lab for non-independent researchers.
    • The PI’s CV and publications.
    • Ethical authorizations or animal permits.
  5. Submit your application by 1 September 2019 via the online application portal.
  6. Your grant application will be evaluated by a commission of the Scientific Advisory Board and by two international experts and given a score from 3 to 6. Based on this score, the commission will decide if and to which amount your project can be funded. The Board of the MS Society will make the final decision by the end of December 2019.
