Abstract: In this presentation, authors review tasks of the industrial research and formulate its key priorities for the power systems engineering in energy transition. We will first review various physical phenomena in power systems and those mathematical descriptions. We will look at the problems from the vendor, system operator, and market participant perspective. We will review existing and evolving power technologies and qualitatively assess the fitness of these to address challenges of the energy transition. Finally, we make a deeper dive into specific planning problem and analysis. We conclude with provoking thoughts and rational summary.

Bio: Dr. Zima-Bockarjova leads power and energy systems group at ABB Corporate research center in Switzerland. She joined ABB in 2010 as a scientist. She was previously with ETH Zurich as a scientific assistant (2005-2010) and a planning engineer with the strategy department of Latvenergo in Latvia (2000-2004). She has over 17 years of professional experience with various aspects of power systems planning, operation, and protection. Her work interests include reliable integration of intermittent and distributed sources to the power grids and evolving landscape of power industry.
