Plasma diagnostics using laser induced fluorescence (LIF) has a long history of successes in many contexts. In many cases LIF is performed on ionic metastables. There is a list of well known precautions for the use of metastable LIF to determine the ion distribution function. An additional consideration will be presented which occurs when most of the metastables are produced directly during ionization. Although it seems to contradict what is in the literature, recent experimental results indicate that this can happen. An approach to the data is presented which enables precision experiments on metastables despite the limitations.
