Global topology forces the occurrence of singularities. A key notion measuring this phenomenon is a multivariable polynomial in universal characteristic classes, the "Thom polynomial'' of a singularity. In the lecture we will explore the theory of Thom polynomials, the challenges and methods of their calculation (equivariant localization, interpolation, Grobner bases), as well as their applications in differential topology and algebraic geometry.  We will also discuss related polynomials measuring degeneracy of quivers and matroids.
