The lecture “towards a new form of building envelopes” outlined an interdisciplinary approach to engineering and construction in the design of complex free-form geometry building envelopes, an approach which necessitates the design of customized tools. To achieve time-efficient design and energy-sustainable fabrication methods the focus is shifted, on an explicit informational level, to the idea of merging the aesthetic design idea and know-how of facade designing techniques and technologies. This erosion of boundaries results in an increase of data and a consequent growth of complexity of design and manufacturing computational tasks. In large projects the effect of this growth of complexity is to limit computational resources to the establishment of an interactive work-flow between design and fabrication processes, including parameters for quality, flexibility, speed of structural engineering and topological models. One major aspect of the influence of this type of interactive work-flow on architectural and structural design is to search, predict, or model specific information in a given data-set in order to generate new knowledge and cause manifold possible solutions. Computer science offers methods such as evolutionary computation, machine learning, and data mining and all of these have a great deal to offer in the field of presenting a knowledge-base for design work-flow. These methods also advance the interaction between structural, mechanical and architectural systems and in this new form of building envelopes represent significant key factors for innovation and digital technology.
