Speaker Dr. Lars Bollen, Twente
Bio: Lars studied Physics and Computer Science for Higher Education at the University Duisburg-Essen in Germany, where he finished his PhD in 2009 in the field of applied computer science and mobile learning in the COLLIDE research group. Currently, he is working as a post-doctoral research scientist in the Department of Instructional Technology at the University Twente in the Netherlands. His research interests include model-based and inquiry learning, modelling & sketching, visual modelling languages and environments, mobile devices and pen-based devices in learning scenarios, and (inter)action analysis.

Models of scientific phenomena have always played a key role in science education. With the help of computer-supported learning environments, students are not limited to work with and learn from given models anymore. By creating models and simulations themselves, learners can externalise, share, test, and revise their mental models. Thus, we went from learning with models towards learning by modelling. This talk presents various modelling approaches and tools for learners, which differ in their level of complexity, the required modelling expertise, and the targeted age groups.
