In this talk I will give an overview of recent numerical and analytical results
explaining the appearance of conformal field theory data in numerical simulations
of quantum many body systems at critical points. I will present examples of
entanglement spectra in 1+1D, and energy spectra of tori and sphere geometries
in 2+1 dimensions, and comment on the relation between tensor network states
and the path integral representation of critical quantum many body states.
