Aim:  Established in 1995 to honor one of the leaders in the arboriculture industry and a founder of the ISA Research Trust, the Hyland R. Johns Grant Program funds longer term research and technology transfer projects that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arborists.

For 2020, the Hyland R. Johns Grants Program seeks to fund research on a topic related to urban tree Root and Soil Management beyond the nursery. Some areas of particular interest to TREE Fund are:
  • Fertilization: chemistry and/or application technology;
  • Mycorrhizal fungi and other symbiotic microbes;
  • Amendments to improve soil structure: gypsum, biochar, integrated mulch, other;
  • Root pruning;
  • Structural soil: composition, effects, etc.;
  • Girdling and other misshapen roots: cause, effect, treatment; and
  • Applied root physiology: studies to better understand reactions of roots to noxious soil-borne chemicals, variable aeration, growth promoting hormones, allelopathic chemicals, etc.

Note that the list above is by no means exhaustive, and proposals to answer other questions relating to root and soil management will be considered.

Funding: max. $25’000

Duration: 3-5 years

Eligibility: TREE Fund welcomes research proposals and applications from a wide range of academic and technical disciplines, of both a qualitative and a quantitative nature. TREE Fund does not fund the following types of projects, and will not accept applications for such work:
  • Grants to individuals;
  • Projects that are primarily municipal tree surveys or assessments;
  • Tree planting programs;
  • Studies of individual tree species for the primary purpose of agricultural or timber/forest planting yield;
  • Commercial tree- or soil-related product testing primarily for the benefit of the company that manufactures the product.

How to Apply: To apply, send an email containing a brief Letter of Inquiry (LOI) of no more than 100 words describing your project title and concept to <[email protected]> before 01-Mar-2020, ideally linking your concept to one of the defined 2020 priority areas listed above. If your LOI is approved, TREE Fund will send you a numbered application form for your use. The application form will contain the following sections: overall project summary, description of measurable outcomes, current knowledge in project area, project work plan, and dissemination plans. This, in addition to a budget and CVs for all PIs and collaborators, must be submitted by email to the address listed above.
