In the talk I will address microbial biodiversity, with an emphasis on phytoplankton. I will start off by discussing the experimental evolution of diversity. What are the selection mechanisms that drive diversification from a homogenous beginning and how is this diversity maintained in ecological interactions? Specifically I will look at the role of environmental heterogeneity in providing the opportunity for biodiversity. Then I move on to deep Alpine lakes and discuss how phytoplankton communities come together. What are the drivers of community assembly? And also here, what is the role of a structured environment? I will address these questions at different time scales, from the decadal to the (sub)daily scale. Finally I want to present new developments in the automated, high frequency monitoring of lakes.
