The problem of uniformisation, as introduced by Poincaré and Riemann in their study of surfaces, asks about the relations between the topology of a manifold (for example our universe) and its possible geometric structures. In this talk I will discuss different aspects of this question, from topology to arithmetic, through different examples: affine manifolds, fundamental groups of Kaehler manifolds and functional transcendence properties of Shimura varieties.
