A unifying principle in Diophantine geometry and the arithmetic of dynamical systems is that an unlikely event happens only finitely many times unless there is a geometric reason for it. I will explain the meaning behind the term unlikely by way of some classical problems in Diophantine geometry and give an overview of some of the recent related work in Diophantine geometry and the arithmetic of dynamical systems.
