Event details

Date 14.07.2020
Category Call for proposal
Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense is announcing the Hearing Restoration Research Program (HRRP) Awards. The HRRP Focused Research Award supports promising research that will accelerate drug discovery and therapeutic development for hearing restoration or accelerate advances in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of auditory dysfunction. The FY20 HRRP strongly encourages applicants to propose research that overcomes major obstacles to hearing restoration or advances diagnosis of acute auditory system injury in austere or remote environments.

All applications for HRRP funding must specifically address at least one of the Focus Areas, which are listed at the end of this announcement.

This award mechanism may be used to support preclinical studies in animals and/or clinical research involving human subjects and human anatomical substances. To support research projects at different stages and the exploration/development of ideas of different maturity levels, two different funding levels are available under this Program Announcement:
  • Funding Level 1 supports exploratory, high-risk/high-reward research that is in the earliest stages of idea development. Research must have the potential to yield new avenues of investigation, such as new approaches, new research tools, or new paradigms. Preliminary data are not required.
  • Funding Level 2 supports the advancement of more mature research toward clinical translation. Applications may focus on any phase of research from basic through translational. Applications proposing translational research may include a pilot clinical trial (PCT) component.

Funding:        Level 1-          max. $250’000
Level 2-           max. $1’250’000

Duration:      Level 1-          2 years
                        Level 2-          3 years

Eligibility: Applicants from international organizations or institutions are eligible to apply, and there are no citizenship restrictions. Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on the application.

How to Apply: Pre-applications are submitted through the eBRAP platform. They should contain contact information, a preproposal narrative, and a list of collaborators and key personnel as suggested on the platform. Full applications (by invitation) will be made via a Grants.gov workspace. Full application packages can be downloaded from Grants.gov at any time.

Pre-Application Deadline: 14-July-2020, 5:00 p.m. EST
Full Application Deadline: 03-November-2020, 11:59 p.m. EST

FY20 Focus Areas
  • Accelerate translation of biological regeneration/repair mechanisms into therapies that treat auditory system injury and restore auditory function.
  • Diagnostic tests that help differentiate sensory, neural, synaptic, and central processing disorders, that may inform applicability and outcomes for current or future hearing restoration therapeutics.
  • Develop reliable in-vitro human models to facilitate the understanding, derivation, and characterization of human auditory cells, and/or to facilitate the evaluation of hearing restoration therapies.
  • Develop and/or validate techniques/methods beyond the audiogram to diagnose acute auditory system injury in austere or remote environments. For example, but not limited to, simple and rapid assessments that are compatible with portable platforms.
