Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense is announcing the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Awards. The SCIRP Translational Research Award is intended to support to support translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in SCI research into clinical applications. Although not exhaustive, some examples include demonstrating studies of pharmaceuticals and medical devices in pre-clinical systems and/or clinical research on therapeutics, devices, or practice using human tissues or resources. Applications must include preliminary and/or published data that are relevant to SCI and support the proposed research project.

To meet the intent of the award mechanism, applications must address at least one of the FY20 SCIRP Focus Areas listed at the end of this announcement.

Funding:        max. $1’250’000

Duration:      3 years

Eligibility: Applicants from international organizations or institutions are eligible to apply, and there are no citizenship restrictions. Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) are eligible to be named as the Principal Investigator (PI) on the application.

They should contain contact information, a preproposal narrative, and a list of collaborators and key personnel as suggested on the platform. FY20 SCIRP Focus Areas
  • Preserving and protecting spinal cord tissue at time of injury for improved neurologic outcomes
  • Identifying and validating biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and for evaluation of treatment efficacies
  • Bowel, genitourinary, cardiopulmonary dysfunction, and neuropathic pain
  • Psychosocial issues relevant to people with SCI, their families, and/or their care partners
  • Rehabilitation and regeneration—Maximizing the function of the residual neural circuitry, including harnessing neuroplasticity and recovery to improve function after SCI
