"Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a cellular mechanism believed to underlie formation of long-term memories. However, due to the sparse distribution of memories across synapses and the invasive nature of LTP induction, it is difficult to show that LTP is directly related to LTM. Recent research suggests that repetitive visual stimulation potentiates the responses of specific orientation-sensitive neuronal populations in early visual cortex. Perceptual learning is a non-declarative type of long-term memory believed to depend on such orientation-sensitive neurons. Here, we used three different perceptual learning tasks to test whether perceptual learning could also be induced by repetitive "LTP-like" visual stimulation."
