This initiative supports collaboration between researchers based in high as well as low and middle income countries and addressing the development and reproduction of social inequality, especially in relation to one of the following aspects:

  • Institutions and Networks
  • Resource Distribution and Inheritance
  • Technological Change and Digitalization
  • Socio-Ecological Processes of Inequality
 
“Global Issues” is the first joint funding initiative of Compagnia di San Paolo (Italy), Novo Nordisk Fonden (Denmark), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Sweden), and the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany).
 
Who can apply:
  • Consortia of up to 5 applicants, including
    • 1 applicant from an institution in a European high income country (It is recommended that at least one applicant is based in Italy, Denmark, Sweden or Germany) and
    • at least 2 applicants from low and middle income countries (the majority of applicants must be located outside of Europe).
  • It is recommended to integrate at least 1 PhD student, preferably in a low and middle income country.
  • Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to act as PIs.
 
Disciplines: social sciences, but interdisciplinary studies are eligible.
 
Funding & Duration: max. EUR 1.5 million for up to 4 years.
  • A relatively even distribution of funding amongst the different partners is expected.
 
Eligible costs:
  • Personnel, travel costs, consumables, acquisition of data, equipment and other research-related costs.
  • Replacements for sabbaticals or short-term teaching-buy-outs.
  • The main share of the funds provided for staff must be allocated to junior scholars.
  • Non-personnel costs can incl. knowledge dissemination, public engagement activities and stakeholder involvement.
  • Up to 10,000 EUR for a preparatory meeting to prepare the pre-proposal.
 
Non eligible costs:
  • PI’s salary, except top-up salary for junior researchers.
 
Timeline of the call:
  • Deadline for pre-proposals: 30 October 2018, midnight CET.
  • Shortlisted pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal in February/March 2019.
  • Deadline for full proposals: June 2019.
  • Interview: September/October 2019
  • Decision: November 2019
