Title: Research in Vocational Education and Social Empowerment for Rural India
Abstract: For the growing unemployed and unskilled population in India, Vocational Education and Training (VET) offers the promise of abundant job prospects with a decent income. Although an evident opportunity, imparting vocational education faces several challenges in the country’s impoverished regions. Technology interventions provide a viable solution to tackle the various challenges in VET. We will talk about our work to address some of the issues we face in imparting vocational education in rural and tribal regions of India and the various opportunities in research in technology enhanced learning and development of haptic simulators for digitally illiterate communities. We will share our experience in carrying technology-based education to the tribal areas in South India, to the communities in the forests of central India and to the villages in the Himalayas.
