The mind, where our thoughts arise and our emotions are perceived is powered by the brain’s metabolism and intricate electrical activity. Today’s imaging technologies, including functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography allow us to map where these mental activities reside and provide a measure of them in real time. Are we approaching ‘mind reading’ and understanding some of the secrets of the body’s most mysterious organ?
Professor Niels Birbaumer from the University of Tübingen in Germany will broach this subject in his upcoming seminar presenting results on brain learning in patients with ‘locked-in’ syndrome. These patients can be totally paralysed while being fully awake and aware. Birbaumer uses Brain and Computer Interfaces (BCI’s), direct communication devices between the brain and computer that aim to interpret patients’ brain activity.
