In mythology and storytelling, rivers and fountains bring life, healing, and uncontrollable power. Since modernism, we have pursued watertight environments, sealing interiors while buried streams and pipes persist beneath our streets and walls. When a leak appears, this fiction collapses. Forgotten infrastructures surface, and suppressed ecologies emerge—moss, humidity, micro-habitats. Leaks become reminders of water’s formative power, suggesting possible futures for architecture and urban space.
\r\n
\r\nTruwant + Rodet + is a Basel-based architecture practice founded in 2017. The diverse background of its partners informs a curious and interdisciplinary practice connecting architecture with landscape, furniture design, research and teaching. Their work focuses on the transformation of existing structures and on the relationship between building, context and landscape, understanding architecture as part of a broader territorial framework.
\r\n
\r\nIn 2017, they received the Swiss Art Award for “A Pavilion.” In 2018, they co-founded the Basel cultural platform dasVerein with Melissa Freudiger. In 2020, together with ASBR, they won the competition for the renovation of the Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris, completed in 2026. In 2023, they won the competition for the adaptive reuse of the former Nauentor postal center in Basel with Bruther and Jan Kinsbergen, as well as the competition for affordable housing in Basel with Clauss Kahl Merz. Since 2023, they have been guest teachers at EPFL Lausanne.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture is part of the School Lecture Series
\r\n
\r\nCOMMUNITY VOL.2
\r\nSeven exemplary projects and case studies
\r\n
\r\nCommunity is an ambivalent concept. Her work, linked to feminist studies, is focused on inclusive domestic architectures able to redefine former biased structures. She is currently Professor of Architecture and Care at ETH Zürich. Previously, she taught at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation GSAPP at Columbia University, at the Royal College of Arts, London, and at the Barcelona School of Architecture ETSAB/ETSAV - UPC. Anna has presented her work widely, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Venice Biennale, and the New York Museum of Modern Art. Between them lies a fluid interstitial space that lends itself to encounters and exchanges, thanks to a double-height space that connects the two levels. This spatial constellation offers a wide variety of possible uses, while the construction uses organic and geo-sourced materials, allowing the new building to become part of its surroundings and creating interiors with unique atmospheres.
\r\n
\r\nLorraine Beaudoin has been running the Joud Beaudoin Architects office in Lausanne with Christophe Joud since 2014. Study partners since the beginning of their architectural training at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Lyon (Ensal) and then at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) for their master's degree and joint diploma in 2009, they contributed between 2010 and 2020 to various research projects and theoretical writings on collective housing at the Laboratory of Theory and History of Architecture (LTH2, EPFL), under the direction of Bruno Marchand. Likewise, in a ferroic material, regions with different orientation of the order parameter, the domains, do not simply exist side by side, but they exhibit new phases and properties in the domain walls. Because of their discontinuous, confined, and topological nature, domain walls exhibit functional states that are not possible in the bulk. Continuing this line of thought, one should expect domain walls in multiferroics to be a particularly rich source of novel phenomena. Here one must distinguish between (i) \"domain walls in multiferroics\", where only the ferroelectric (or magnetic) order is considered so that little is learned about the multiferroic state, and (ii) \"multiferroic domain walls\" where the ferroic phase coexistence of the wall itself is of interest. The latter are rarely studied, and I will discuss some of their intriguing features in my talk.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Professor Manfred Fiebig is known for his work in light-matter interaction in systems with strong electronic correlations. (Multi-) ferroics are of particular interest to him. After obtaining his doctoral degree in physics at the University of Dortmund, he worked at the University of Tokyo, the Max Born Institut Berlin, and the University of Bonn before he was appointed as Professor of Multifunctional Ferroic Materials in the Department of Materials at ETH Zurich in 2011. In 2021 he also became a member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and he was elected as Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz. Most recent distinctions include the 2022 APS Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids as well as the of the Stern Gerlach Medal in 2023, the highest distinction in Experimental Physics of the German Physical Society. He is one of the founders of the ETH Spinoff Company “3Wave Instruments”.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-12T08:41:37", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-09T10:58:25", "link_label": "Website", "link_url": "https://mat.ethz.ch/department/people/person-detail.fiebig.html", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MXF 1", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MXF%201", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Prof. Manfred Fiebig, ETHZ", "organizer": "Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Fabien Sorin & Prof. Esther Amstad", "contact": "Prof. Gregor Jotzu, Prof. Fabien Sorin & Prof. Esther Amstad", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119701/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/314/?format=api" ] } ] }
