Project proposals that have been previously rejected by the Foundation may be resubmitted once, accompanied by an explanation of the changes made to the original application.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<a href=\"https://www.demenz-forschung.ch/media/cfp2026_callpapers_cda.pdf\"><strong>Career Development Awards</strong>:</a><br>\r\n<br>\r\nEmpowering advanced postdoctoral researchers at Swiss universities and research institutions to establish themselves as independent investigators in neurodegenerative disease research. Funding is a <strong>maximum of CHF 100’000 per year for up to five years </strong>(phase 1 and 2 together), pending on a successful reapplication after phase 1.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Eligiblity:</strong> In<strong> PHASE 1 a</strong>dvanced postdoctoral scientists conducting research in a host laboratory at a public research facility in Switzerland are supported for up to three years. Researchers who have worked 3 - 5 years as postdoctoral researchers at the time of application are eligible to apply. The awardees must submit annual progress reports and a final report. To apply for <strong>PHASE 2 </strong>of the fellowship, applicants must submit a progress report, research plan and a career plan at least 3 months before the completion of phase 1. Applicants qualifying for phase 2 of the award will be invited for an interview with members of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong><a href=\"https://www.demenz-forschung.ch/media/cfp2026_callpapers_hsr.pdf\">Research Grant Competition 2026:</a></strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nThis call invites applications for projects aimed at developing and/or validating digital and non-pharmacological approaches for the prevention and diagnosis of dementia, as well as for the care of people living with dementia. <strong>The topics covered in this call include:</strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Prevention strategies to reduce the risk of dementia, delay its onset, or slow disease progression</li>\r\n\t<li>Innovative digital approaches to advance timely and accurate diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases</li>\r\n\t<li>Non-pharmacological interventions aimed at enhancing the treatment, support, and overall quality of care for individuals living with dementia</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nTwo different funding opportunities are offered:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Pilot Grants</strong> of maximum CHF 100’000 for one year</li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Consolidator Grants</strong> of maximum CHF 250’000 for up to three years</li>\r\n</ul>\r\nResearchers working at Swiss universities or non-commercial research institutions, who h<strong>ave not received funding from the Synapsis Foundation for at least one year at the time of submission</strong>, are eligible to apply. <strong>Each applicant can only submit one application in response to the 2026 call for proposals. </strong>Project proposals that have been previously rejected by the Foundation may be resubmitted once, accompanied by an explanation of the changes made to the original application<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>SUBMISSION:</strong> A <strong>two-step submission process must be followed</strong>, with<strong> a Letter of Intent to be submitted before 8 April 2026 at 11:59 pm</strong>. Do not hesitate to contact the <a href=\"mailto:[email protected]\">CECAM Event Manager</a> if you have any question.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Description</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe human genome includes more than 300 genes coding for ion channel proteins, representing approximately 2% of the total number of genes. This abundance of ion channels highlights their critical role in numerous biological processes and their involvement in diseases, underscoring their importance as potential drug targets. Ion channels exert their biological roles through three main functional characteristics: the highly efficient selective conduction of ions; the capacity to open and close in response to chemical/physical stimuli (gating); and the decrease in conductance upon sustained stimuli (inactivation). In the last 20 years, the number of experimental atomic structures of ion channels has increased from a few units to hundreds, now including representative structures for most of the ion channel families. Simulations based on these experimental structures have significantly contributed to the current understanding of conduction, selectivity, gating, and inactivation [1-2]. Strengthening the quantitative agreement between simulations and experiments is now essential for advancing in this field. This effort is currently hampered by common issues in biomolecular simulations, such as the limited timescales for observing biologically relevant events and the sub-optimal accuracy of the underlying physical models. Both of these shortcomings are expected to be mitigated by recent methodological developments. For instance, atomic simulations of ion channels with polarizable force fields have been recently reported [3]. Lack of polarization is a well-known limitation of classical force fields, especially when describing ion-protein and ion-water interactions in a crowded environment like the pore cavity. Consequently, the usage of polarizable force fields is considered a promising strategy for improving the agreement with experimental data about ion conduction and selectivity. An alternative strategy for enhancing the model accuracy in critical channel regions is to combine molecular mechanics with quantum approaches. Thanks to the ever-increasing computational resources, now combined with advancements in codes for hybrid QM/MM models, this approach is becoming feasible for ion channel research [4]. Increasing computational resources, coupled with improved algorithms for accelerating rare events and potentially harnessing machine learning, are also opening new possibilities in the study of state transitions. Gating and inactivation events of ion channels are finally becoming accessible to atomic simulations, offering important insights into the mechanistic functioning of this important protein superfamily [5].             "description": "<strong>Title:</strong> <br>\r\nStructural molecular biology for the nucleosome as a regulator on genomic DNA<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Abstract:</strong><br>\r\nIn eukaryotic cells, genomic DNA is highly compacted into chromatin through its association with histone proteins. The fundamental unit of chromatin, the nucleosome, consists of ~147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These nucleosomes are connected by linker DNA, forming a “beads-on-a-string” structure that enables efficient packaging of the genome.<br>\r\nBeyond structural compaction, nucleosomes play a central role in regulating genome function. They can restrict access to DNA and act as barriers to essential processes such as transcription, replication, and repair. At the same time, nucleosomes serve as key epigenetic platforms, where histone modifications and histone variants modulate chromatin structure and dynamics to control gene activity.<br>\r\nTo better understand these regulatory mechanisms, we employ biochemical and structural approaches to investigate nucleosome structure and dynamics. Our studies aim to elucidate how structural transitions of nucleosomes influence DNA accessibility and ultimately govern genomic regulation. I will present our recent structural and biochemical insights and discuss their implications for understanding nucleosome-mediated genome regulation.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Bio:</strong><br>\r\nHitoshi Kurumizaka is a Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1995, he started his postdoctoral training at NIH in the USA, in the laboratory of Molecular Embryology (Alan Wolffe Lab), where he began chromatin research. In 1997, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist. He subsequently moved to Waseda University, where he served as Associate Professor and later as Professor of Molecular and Structural Biology. Since 2018, he has been Professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences, The University of Tokyo. His research focuses on the structural basis of chromatin and epigenetic regulation in eukaryotic genomes. In 2020, he established an in-house cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform to advance high-resolution structural studies of chromatin and genome-associated protein complexes. Professor Kurumizaka has made significant contributions to the field of chromatin biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleosomes and genome-associated protein complexes. His work has been published in leading international journals and has substantially advanced our understanding of chromatin architecture and epigenetic regulation.<br>\r\n ",
