Particular interest is attracted by resonant metasurfaces, where optical modes provide extreme confinement of light in the nanostructures volume and subsequent enhancement of light-matter interaction. This aspect is essential to boost the efficiency of various phenomena, from optical nonlinearities (e.g., multiphoton interaction like in second-harmonic generation) to reconfiguration mechanisms (i.e., dynamic modulation of the refractive index). In this talk I will survey techniques of controlling light at the nanoscale, focusing on nonlinear and reconfiguration processes, what they offer and what are their limitations.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong><u>You don't know POBs?</u></strong><br>\r\nPOBs (Pizza-Optics-Beer) are monthly seminars organized by the student association EPFL Photonics Chapter.<br>\r\nA PhD or a postdoc gives a 20-minutes presentation about his/her research in photonics.             "description": "<strong>Special Seminar</strong>\r\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-98cefd8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\">\r\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><br>\r\nHow did life begin from chemistry? One leading idea is that RNA played a central role because it can act both as genetic material and as a catalyst. A major challenge has been that known RNA polymerase ribozymes, the catalysts of RNA copying, are large and complex, making them difficult to copy and unlikely to arise from prebiotic RNA sequence pools.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nIn this seminar, Edoardo Gianni will present QT45, a compact 45-nucleotide RNA polymerase ribozyme discovered from random RNA sequence pools. QT45 can catalyse the two essential reactions required for RNA self-replication: the synthesis of itself and the synthesis of its complementary strand. This work suggests that RNA-copying activity may be more common in sequence space than previously thought. This thesis develops computational design and optimization methods for lightweight mechanical systems with complex geometries and rich deformation behavior. The central goal is to create a simulation-driven inverse design framework in which shape, material, and structural parameters are optimized together so that the resulting physical system achieves desired equilibrium configurations, alignment targets, and crucially functional mechanical responses.             "description": "<p>Abstract<br>\r\nAround 30% of cancers are preceded by chronic inflammation which occurs at the site where tumors will develop. However, whether this oncogenic process, particularly observed in the intestine, can be initiated by a specific immune cell population remains unknown. We recently identified two distinct effector T cell populations capable to initiate the oncogenic transformation of a healthy intestinal epithelium (Fesneau et al., Nat Immunol. 2024; Brewer et al., Nat. Rev. Canc. 2024), as well as the factors controlling their differentiation. By revealing the presence of tumorigenic T cells, this work opens a new field in oncology and immunology that will be key for both our understanding of the early steps of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic therapies against cancer.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n </p>",
