After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.
\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.
\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.
\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes. These ultra-high-filed (UHF) scanners are particularly relevant for neuroimaging, where anatomical and functional images can be acquired with higher spatial and temporal resolution than on conventional scanners. However, UHF scanners remain difficult to operate, and understanding their specific limitations is essential. These systems indeed face several challenges arising from MR physics and biological effects that must be addressed within engineering constraints. Leverage the potential of UHF scanners, for instance through field monitoring, is therefore important to make the most of these scanners and benefit from the intrinsic SNR gain.
\r\nfMRI particularly benefits from the increase in magnetic field strength, enabling studies to be performed at higher resolution than at lower fields. In order to maintain reasonable acquisition times despite larger imaging matrices, several acceleration strategies have been developed, e.g. multi-slice EPI (SMS-EPI), three-dimensional EPI (3D-EPI) and non-Cartesian sampling schemes. In addition, functional contrasts also benefit from the field increase, including improved spatial localization of the BOLD contrast and the possibility to exploit VASO contrast.
", "image_description": "7T MRI Seminar", "creation_date": "2026-03-23T10:36:15", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-23T10:39:08", "link_label": "Website of the event", "link_url": "https://cibm.ch/event/7t-mri-seminar-leveraging-the-potential-of-uhf-scanners-for-fmri-studies/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CH F1 614", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CH%20F1%20614", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/65404945981", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Caroline Le Ster, CEA Neurospin, Paris, France", "organizer": "CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging", "contact": "Miguel Molina, CIBM Media & Events Manager", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "7T MRI scanner, fMRI, UHF, Biomedical imaging", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120149/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/284/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71457, "title": "lunch&LEARN: Bridging the gap between the math taught in first-year courses and the math used in life sciences research", "slug": "lunchlearn-bridging-the-gap-between-the-math-taugh", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/lunchlearn-bridging-the-gap-between-the-math-taugh", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32806/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-21", "end_date": "2026-04-21", "start_time": "12:15:00", "end_time": "13:00:00", "description": "
For more than two decades leading professional organizations have called for a reform of the mathematics education of biology and life sciences students. This is followed by the important notion of qualitative change in a biological systems, or bifurcation.
\r\n
\r\nStudents learn in particular about Hopf bifurcations or how a system can start or stop oscillating. It is motivated by results that demonstrate that the symplectic fillings of a contact 3-manifold hold information on the contact structure. Most notably, the contact structure of any contact 3-manifold that admits a strong symplectic filling is tight. Although the symplectic fillings of certain contact manifolds have been classified, the general classification remains an open problem. Working towards this, one can consider the geography problem for symplectic fillings. In the paper Spine removal surgery and the geography of symplectic fillings, Sam Lisi and Chris Wendl prove the existence of a universal bound for the geography (Euler characteristic and signature) of possible minimal strong symplectic fillings of a closed contact 3-manifold with a supporting planar spinal open book decomposition. Following a brief introduction to symplectic and contact topology, the aim of my talk is to explain Lisi and Wendl's result. For this purpose, I will provide an overview of symplectic fillings and the related geography problem, and introduce spinal open book decompositions.
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-03T09:23:22", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-15T16:04:09", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 504", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%20504", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Annika Thiele, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/119948/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71486, "title": "Topological Data Analysis for Gait Pattern Classification", "slug": "topological-data-analysis-for-gait-pattern-classif", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/topological-data-analysis-for-gait-pattern-classif", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32831/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32831/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32831/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-23", "end_date": "2026-04-23", "start_time": "10:00:00", "end_time": "11:00:00", "description": "
The classification of gait patterns is an important challenge in movement analysis, as it supports clinical assessment and decision-making by enabling diagnosis and severity stratification. This is particularly relevant in real-world settings, where GE detection can be diQicult due to heterogeneity in walking conditions and gait patterns, potentially biasing clinically relevant metrics and, consequently, decision-making.
\r\nWithin our department, preliminary results have shown that TDA-based features can achieve classification performance comparable to that of SGPs in fall-risk assessment. These findings suggest that topology oQers a competitive alternative for representing gait data, with the potential to better handle variability across subjects and pathological
\r\nconditions.
\r\nBuilding on these results, we plan to further extend the TDA framework in two directions. First, we aim to investigate time-aware topological methods to better capture the
\r\ntemporal structure of gait signals. Second, we will explore Topological Deep Learning (TDL) approaches to reduce reliance on handcrafted design choices and potentially
\r\nimprove classification performance. By combining the robustness of topology with datadriven representation learning, this work seeks to provide robust tools for the classification of typical and pathological gait patterns.
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-30T09:44:37", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-30T09:47:45", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CM 1 517", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CM%201%20517", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Elena Botti, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120224/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71258, "title": "SUPER SANDWICH SEMINAR", "slug": "super-sandwich-seminar-365", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/super-sandwich-seminar-365", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32616/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32616/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32616/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-23", "end_date": "2026-04-23", "start_time": "12:00:00", "end_time": "13:00:00", "description": "
Triple S (Super Sandwich Seminar) will feature 3 speakers per week, each presenting for 15 minutes, followed by a 5 minutes Q&A session.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-02-26T17:14:55", "last_modification_date": "2026-02-26T17:16:15", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Flor Cecilia Navarro Negredo, Radtke Lab; We found that the patterns of longitudinal change in neural network dynamics predicted psychosocial outcomes five years later in young adulthood.
\r\nWe found that “transcendent thinking” – seeing situations not just in terms of X happened to person A, which makes me feel thusly, but in terms of the larger societal and contextual forces that shaped how Person A was treated and how Person A reacted, the broader implications and lessons one can draw from that situation, and the larger issues it exemplifies or reveals—correlated with a particular set of neural activity dynamics and predicted future structural and functional neural development across the subsequent two years, controlling for the starting state of neural development, and independent of IQ and SES. Transcendent thinking also countered negative effects of exposure to community violence on structural brain development.
\r\nThe neural development predicted by transcendent thinking (the changes in the brain across the 2-year period) in turn predicted young adult identity strength, self-liking, relationship satisfaction, and achievement 5 years later.
\r\nThese findings reveal a novel predictor of neural development across mid-adolescence, and underscore the active role adolescents play in their own brain development through the meaning they make of the social world. Implications for secondary education and pedagogy will be discussed.
\r\n
\r\n
", "image_description": "Visitors Talk: Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, University of Southern California", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T12:31:22", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T12:31:38", "link_label": "Website of the event", "link_url": "https://cibm.ch/event/visitors-talk-mary-helen-immordino-yang-university-of-southern-california/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "CH F1 614", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==CH%20F1%20614", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/meeting/register/J9fJmYSQStOHtZMlxhTgaw", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, University of Southern California", "organizer": "CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging", "contact": "Miguel Molina, CIBM Media & Events Manager", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "neuroscience, psycology, education", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120181/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/284/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 70968, "title": "From Functional Genomics to Tissue Models: Investigating Pseudomonas aeruginosa-Macrophage Interactions", "slug": "from-functional-genomics-to-tissue-models-invest-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/from-functional-genomics-to-tissue-models-invest-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32356/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32356/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32356/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-24", "end_date": "2026-04-24", "start_time": "17:00:00", "end_time": null, "description": "
Thesis Director: Prof. A.
