In this talk, I will give an overview of my path as a multi-disciplinary researcher, describing projects ranging from computational information design to simulations of infectious disease outbreaks, and how this experience led me to the development of novel biomedical tools combining data visualization, machine learning, and mobile technologies. I will focus on some ongoing projects dealing with the collection and modeling of infectious disease data, and will discuss the challenges associated with obtaining field data while preserving patient privacy, as well as deriving machine learning models that can be generalized to new cohorts and eventually have an impact in outbreak response.
