It is easy to know how students are feeling; you just need to look at
their facial expressions and body language. Besides, an expert teacher
will instinctively know how their students are feeling and what to do in
response. These attitudes are common within the literature, but are they
really true? In this talk I will describe research exploring the
emotional context of the classroom. I will focus in particular on the
application of the Subtle Stone, a tangible technology designed to
support private, real-time emotional communication in the classroom. The
application of this tool uncovers an emotional communication gap between
students and their teachers, the complexities of students’ emotional
experiences during learning, and finally the untrained ability of
teachers to respond to students’ emotional experiences. Drawing from the
lessons learnt from this work I will outline some future directions for
HCI research within this space.
