We will see how amenability of a group assists one when working with its group
ring, and also helps in working with group rings in general. We will introduce a
notion of the Newton polytope of a matrix, and see how it is relevant in the
study of fibreings of 3-manifolds, and in general in the theory of
Bieri--Neumann--Strebel invariants.
