Abstract
Asphalt concrete is a road pavement material composed primarily from nonrenewable resources including mineral aggregates and petroleum-derived bitumen, for which practical substitutes are limited. The challenge, therefore, is not to replace these materials entirely, but to make their use more sustainable. In this presentation, Dr. Martins Zaumanis will share his research results on strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of asphalt concrete, including advanced recycling techniques, performance-based asphalt mixture design, and optimization of material use.

Biography
The research of Martins Zaumanis is driven by the goal of integrating sustainability as a fundamental principle in the design of road pavement materials. He investigates recycling of asphalt pavements, explores the use of alternative and waste materials in asphalt concrete production, and works on asphalt production and paving technologies that reduce environmental impact of construction. His research integrates advanced mixture design methodologies, performance-based testing procedures, and the use of machine learning to enable pavement performance prediction. Dr. Zaumanis actively collaborates with industry partners to promote effective implementation of the research results in practice.
