In the first part of the talk I will discuss older work on the Morgan-Shalen compactification of the space of SL(2,C) representations of a surface group and the relationship with Higgs bundles and harmonic maps. In the second part of the talk I will discuss some generalizations to higher rank bundles, and some finer compactifications in rank 2 that have appeared recently. I will also provide some open questions.
