In this talk I will begin by introducing elliptic curves and some basic questions about them.  After recalling what is known in the case of elliptic curves over the rational numbers, I will discuss some new heuristics and conjectures about how the group of points grows in towers of abelian extensions. This is joint work with Barry Mazur.
