Neurons in the somatosensory whisker “barrel” cortex of rodents do not just respond to sensory variables. Instead, as reported by multiple labs, they reflect the animal’s decision to act in a task, and even the outcomes of such actions, e.g., whether they go rewarded or unrewarded. What is this non-sensory information for, how does it differ across cell types, and how does it alter our textbook picture of hierarchical processing, in which sensory areas act simply to convey information about sensory features while other areas process this information to drive behaviour? I will present data to show how task-dependent responses are distributed across neural cell types, and speculate on what the purpose of these responses might be.
