In this talk I will present the highlights of our recent research on the coherent optical control of the exciton and spin states of a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot. We study a dot embedded in a photodiode structure using a photocurrent detection technique, which is a measurement of the absorption of the sequences of picosecond laser pulses used to resonantly excite the dot. Using this experimental setup, we can investigate atom-like coherent light-matter interactions in a solid-state context, and develop coherent control schemes to program the quantum states of single quantum dots.
