In the first half of this talk I will give a quick introduction to the mathematematical theory of conformal blocks as defined by Tsuchiya, Ueno and Yamada in 1989. The relevance of conformal blocks for algebraic geometers lies in the fact that they are related to spaces of theta functions over moduli spaces of vector bundles over a compact Riemann surface and thus the theory of conformal blocks gives some information on the topology and the geometry of these moduli spaces. In the second half of this talk I will survey a couple of recent results on the so-called Hitchin/WZW connection on the sheaf of conformal bloc
