This talk will discuss how modern computing architectures can open up new possibilities for the practice and theory of control engineering. The first part of the talk will show how custom parallel digital circuits can be designed to efficiently implement embedded optimization solvers such as those arising in model predictive control. The second part will show how ideas from control theory can be used to design a new method for solving systems of equations with positive definite matrices and that this new method can outperform existing linear solvers when implemented on custom parallel digital circuits. The talk will conclude with some research questions and theoretical problems that have arisen while working at this interface between control and computing.
