Most microbes live in groups, and most microbial groups are composed of individuals that differ in their biological properties. If these different types of individuals perform spezialized tasks and engage in division of labor, the group as a whole can aquire new functions. We are interested in the division of labor in microbial communities. I will present current work on how clonal populations of pathogenic bacteria divide labor to infect their hosts. And I will discuss future plans for investigating the division of labor in experimental and natural microbial communities, and for employing groups of job-sharing bacteria for applied purposes.
