Thanks to various new analytical methods the knowledge on the sources and the processing of aerosols has advanced a lot in the last years. Especially little was known about the important organic fraction of the aerosols. In this presentation, a summary will be given on the knowledge of the sources of particulate matter in Switzerland. It will be shown what the composition of the aerosols typically is and how much traffic, wood burning and other sources contribute. Latest findings and concepts concerning the secondary aerosol formation from gaseous prescursors and the aging of the carbonaceous material will be presented
