EPFL Webinar: Frontiers in Hydropower
October 11, 2021, 8:30am – 1:00pm
Though being the worldwide largest renewable electricity generation technology by capacity, hydropower is facing major challenges that will be discussed during a dedicated on-line workshop jointly organised by the EPFL Institute of Mechanical Engineering and the EPFL Energy Center.
The workshop will host leading international experts in hydropower from academia and industry that will discuss some of the following technical topics.
- Fatigue and wear of components, for example, due to abrasion of sediment-laden flows and/or cavitation.
- Predictive modeling of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations at high Reynolds numbers.
- Turbulence.
- Machine-health monitoring using advanced sensors and data-driven methods.
- Digital twins for predictive maintenance.
- New design principles of hydropower plants providing fast regulation services to future power systems.
- Structural (in)stability.
