The essential dimension of a class of algebraic objects is the minimum number of independent parameters required to define each object. Let A be a finitely generated algebra (with 1, but not necessarily commutative) over field. It is an interesting problem to compute or estimate the essential dimension of the class of representations of A of given dimension over k. I will explain how the essential dimension of representations of A determines if A is of finite representation type, tame or wild, and how we may extract new numerical invariants of A from it. If A is the path algebra of a quiver, we can compute the invariants explicitly
