The 37th edition of the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) will be held this year at Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual event is the largest conference on optical communication in Europe, and one of the largest and most important events in this field worldwide. The conference travels from one European country to another each year and in its long history it is only the third time, that Switzerland can host this prestigious event. The conference is co-sponsored by EPFL, ETHZ, SNF, and organized by Electrosuisse.
This year’s programme features a plenary session on Monday morning (Sept. 19th) with talks on the FTTH activities in Switzerland and Japan, by Carsten Schloter (CEO of Swisscom) and Hiromich Shinoharu (NTT), on optical communications in a Trading Center (Andrew Bach, NYSE), perspectives of EU research in optical communications (T. Skordas, EC), and on quantum communication (N. Gysin, U. Geneva). Highlights from the devices sessions are, e.g., novel type of fibers with opto-mechanical or MEMS-type functionality, new hybrid integration concepts allowing fabrication of ultra-compact coherent receivers operating at 28 Gbaud, advanced sub-system devices for light processing (such as wavelength conversion) operating at an ultrahigh data rate of 320Gbit/s. Hot topics in the network and transmission system sessions will include, e.g., the demonstration of record receiver sensitivity and its use in un-repeatered transmission, significant progress on flexible and elastic network solutions in the area of backbone and core networks, and outstanding scientific results and technological innovations related to broadband optical access and local-area networks.
The ECOC Exhibition featuring approximately 300 exhibitors will take place in the same building.
