Young investigators face a major challenge in the transition from postdoctoral/clinical fellow to their first tenured faculty position. It is hard to gain significant and truly independent funding at this career stage, yet such support is critical to advance up the academic ladder, especially in Europe. Action is needed now to avoid a generation gap that would severely compromise future European excellence in diabetes research.
 
The EFSD/Novo Nordisk Foundation Future Leaders Award Programme is intended to:
  • Identify outstanding clinical and basic scientists in European diabetes research at a critical stage in their career.
  • Support them in their transition to a tenured academic appointment in diabetes research in Europe.
  • Foster their development into the leaders of tomorrow.
 
Who can apply:
  • and basic scientists.
  • Applicants must be employed at a non-profit institution in the EU or Associated Countries and should provide clear evidence of their intention to pursue an academic career in Europe.  
  • Have obtained a PhD or MD no more than 10 years before the start of the award. Exceptions for maternity/paternity/sick leave are taken into account.
  • Have a track record of excellence and achievement in their chosen area of diabetes research.
  • Applicants to all EFSD programmes must be paid-up members of EASD.
  • Applicants can hold only one EFSD award at a time.
  • There can be more than one EFSD award per lab, but for separate projects.
 
Funding & Duration:
  • DKK 5 million (~ EUR 670’000) for 5 years (subject to satisfactory progress).
  • Eligible costs: part of the awardee’s salary, personnel (technician or postdoctoral fellow) and direct research costs. Up to 5% of the grant can be used for its administration (accounting, controlling, auditing, reporting). No overheads will be granted.
  • The budget must be prepared in DKK and it must mention the exchange rate.
 
Internal deadline for Institutional Letter of Support: 25 March 2019
Deadline: 1 April 2019 at 18:00 (CET)
Decision: July 2019. Four grants are awarded each year.
