The traveling range is a key-performance indicator for an electric vehicle. As a matter of fact, the high-cost of the battery pack, the limited availability of recharging stations, and the large recharging-time make this parameter extremely critical for the daily usage of an electric vehicle. Traditionally, the vehicles are equipped with “range-estimators”: algorithms, which try to make a real-time prediction of the residual traveling range. In the seminar a completely different approach will be proposed and briefly discussed: the closed-loop control of the range. According to this approach, a desired discharge profile is tracked (as a function of the traveling distance), and the drive-style (condensed in a single variable) is used as control variable. The result is a guaranteed traveling-distance, with minimum impact of the vehicle performances. This approach has been demonstrated with experimental results on a small electric vehicle.
