The aim of the Fyssen Foundation is to “encourage all forms of scientific inquiry into cognitive mechanisms, including thought and reasoning, which underlie animal and human behaviour; their biological and cultural bases, and phylogenetic and ontogenetic development”.

The 2019 Fyssen International Prize will be awarded for research in ecological psychology and spatial navigation. Spatial Cognition is one of the central characteristics of our species, and it is expressed through human behaviour at the individual, population and inter- regional levels, and is reflected in many aspects of society and culture. The prize will be awarded to a scholar who has significantly advanced our understanding of the relationship between coordinate systems and variables such as environment, language, and cosmology.
