The General Theory of Relativity predicts the existence of gravitational waves. However only compact astrophysical objects in rapid accelerated motion can emit waves with sufficient amplitude to stand above noise. Current instruments are now at the edge of detecting signals but with the next generation of detectors several tens of binary neutron star coalescence events per year are predicted to be observed. After a short introduction on sources of gravitational radiation the main experimental challenges in detection will be presented and some results from the LIGO-Virgo network will be shown. Finally the future of the field will be outlined.
