I'll discuss Gross-Zagier formulas for the central derivative of a Rankin-Selberg L-function attached to a cuspform and a Hecke character of smaller weight. I'll compare the p-adic and archimedean versions of this formula and give some applications to conjectures on algebraic cycles.
