Given a proper algebraic map f:X-->Y of complex algebraic varieties, we define a sequence D_i(f) of constructible subsets, the "higher discriminants" of f. While being much coarser and easier to compute in examples than that resulting by stratification theory, it nevertheless encodes many important topological properties of the map f. We show this by discussing two applications of this notion: one related with the calculus of constructible functions and the MacPherson Euler local obstruction, the other giving a general strategy to prove support theorems in the sense of Ngo.
