"Hilbert schemes and compactified Jacobians of families of planar curves and support theorems"

I will describe work in collaboration with V. Shende giving a support
theorem, analogous to Ngo's, for the relative
Hilbert scheme of a family of planar curves. In the first,
introductory part, I will recall some definitions and results
on Hilbert schemes and compactified Jacobians, extending to singular
planar curves the classical theory of the Abel Jacobi map.
I will also discuss some facts about the topological properties of
algebraic maps, especially the "perverse filtration"
and the decomposition theorem. The second part of the talk will be
devoted to giving the statement of the
support theorem for the Hilbert scheme, a rough discussion of the
proof and some applications.
